Preheat the oven to 160°C. Lightly grease a 13×9 inch (33×23cm) cake tin.
Place the butter, sugar and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs, two at a time, beating well
Sift the flour and baking powder over the butter mixture and mix until combined well.
Spoon the mixture into the cake tin and bake for 35 minutes or until cooked when tested with a skewer.
Cool in the tin.
Cut the cake as shown in the diagram. Arange pieces to form a sailboat on a large tray or aluminium foil–covered cardboard, about 20×18 inches (51×46cm), leaving a space between the sails for a mast.
Ice the cake as required and add lollies for decoration.
